Sleep Needs and Wake Windows By Age
Getting your baby or toddler on an age-appropriate sleep schedule is the foundational task in the journey to healthy sleep! A schedule that leads to restful sleep takes into account:
Wake Windows
Total Awake Time
Number of Naps
Total Nap Hours
Total Night Sleep
Total Sleep in a 24 Hour Period
Number of Night Feedings Offered
In the quest for the perfect nap or longer stretches of night sleep, you’ve surely heard about “Wake Windows”. Getting the right wake windows is so important because your baby or toddler needs the correct amount of sleep pressure in order to sleep well—too short of a wake window, and your little one won’t be tired enough to stay asleep for very long; however, too long of a wake window can lead to difficulty sleeping due to overtiredness.
But it isn’t just all about wake windows! You need to know how much total sleep your baby or toddler should be getting in a 24 hour period, and what portion of that should be day sleep or night sleep. Use my master sleep chart to help you know the ideal recommendations for your little one’s sleep!
